November 11 Update

November 11 Update

NEWEST RENDER:

OBJECTIVES:

Try new ways of rendering the video - putting the clips in different orders - experiment with sound - try to figure out a lose narrative (even a super abstract one) that people can follow so that there is something to understand!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

MEDIA:

These days I have been visiting the strand to extract them of their resources being the artists books. Through this method of opening and observing books I have found some new artists I am inspired by:

Gilbert and George

Blachon

Oyvind Fahlstrom

Maurice Sendak

And I didn't realize Brian Eno doesn't only do music but crazy visuals!

With this whirlwind of book obsession I have chose to read The Myth of Sisyphus by Albert Camus which is so far very interesting and definitely inspiring in terms of my existential thought and dealing with the absurd - life - living - ect.

Other inspiring things: Don Cherry ....Observing life with few screens and influences from socials.

My state of mind is insane these days - I animated on a vase but I have also made the most terrifying humongous vase that has nothing to do with thesis but as a sort of fried way of analyzing how I feel about life at the moment. All sort of around fetish, intimacy, trauma, stuff like that, my general disgust in everything right now as dramatic as it is.

Struggling with: currently emotions as always but also with my thesis, since all my animations are sequences that are rather short it brings up the question of what? and why? Yes I am exploring but why? Why am I working in this way? I need to analyze the way I work. The peer reviews were very insightful and attached are helpful notes from them.

DIGITAL NOTES:

Remove extra frames in reels

Bigger screen

Ask Mamie to voice her biography

Fix ending - figure out mediums and aspect ratios

Unifying factor - sound

Communicate expirence

different dialogues for the different styles

November 4 Update

 November 4 Update

This week I continued animating, experimenting more with color and also different pens yet still on newsprint. On Wednesday I came up with a genuis idea to animate on my body like a phenistiskope (?) but around my stomach or back, but now in a wake of clarity I feel that this is sort of unnecessary and I don't necessarily feel the need to do this. I did do a trial test which I've uploaded here.

ANIMATION:

I only exported the end of the clip because it takes years to export and this is the only thing I have changed.

BODY TEST:

NEXT WEEK:

Well - for next week I want to keep on animating new sequences - currently I'm working on some boils. I will record a call with my father and insert it into the animation. Keep animating - fix sound or edit it who knows - continue to be inspired.

I watched vince Colins animations and felt decently inspired by his fun psychedelic traditional early stuff. I also watched kiriku which is just top dog animation.

October 28 Update

October 28 Update

Field Trip:

Edward Hopper at the Whitney Museum

I went to go see the Edward Hopper exhibit this morning and was fascinated by Hoppers use of color and his ability to portray perspective. Although it is not related to my project directly seeing how Hopper paints people and conveys a certain emotion through all his pieces is definitely inspiring.

MindGame - Masaaki Yuasa

MindGame is an animated movie that blew my mind! It incorporates different animation techniques throughout the movie and has a great storyline. I am going to take inspiration from how Yuasa choses to depict characters and his excellent use of color.

Progress:

This week I combined my animations and placed them with music. I also interviewed my mom and created subtitles which I then placed to old home videos.

MORE CERAMICS:

I have been continuing my pots and may photograph them in some sort of animation-esque way to incorporate into my thesis. I feel like blending them within the video could be successful.

THE MET:

The Met was lots of fun, tons of inspirational work - definitely inspired.

THIS WEEK:

More animations!!!! More sequences.... animate maybe someone in the subway and how the cars connect when you're in the tunnels and you can see the train across from you. I was on the subway and this happened and it occurred to me to animate this.

I have about 10 minutes of interview with my mother and sister when they were here that I have all transcribed so perhaps create more subtitles to pair with the sound.

EDIT SOUND!!! it sounds a little chaotic now which is ok... but what do I want to achieve with the sound, there must be a method to the chaos.

October 7 Update

 October 7 Update

What did I do this week?

I continued my ceramic creations as outlets for ideas, the terms 'enfants cosmic' is something I am playing with for a vase I'm creating and may use that as inspiration for my animations. I have been drawing lots. I have hit a rut in my animation process with the newsprint and marker so I decided to continue my reels I've been making. As well as try Anna Firths crosshair tutorial - https://www.annafirth.com/calartshair

Current Media:

I'm still reading Naked Lunch, thinking lots about vignettes and how they can be used. This will come useful for when I want to edit sound which I should really start thinking about since it'll be a big part of my work.

Amanda sent me this animation https://vimeo.com/67457641 The Pirate of Love. I really love how they mix live video with animation! I just might use this in my thesis... so many ideas...

I have also been intrigued by the idea of hotels, I don't think I'll use this for my thesis but I'm fascinated by how they are holding places for all types of people of all ages in foreign places. I may begin The Hotel by Sophie Calle as suggested to me by a friend.

THE MAKEUP - I have become obsessed with this band

Woodcut I made for my relief class that may be relevant:

For next week?

I'd like to begin a long sequence that I can continue for a couple weeks, everything I have done so far has been relatively short with endings that makes it so that I can composite them together in any order. This is nice but it feels it has no purpose, I will plan an animation with more of a story that I will aim to make around 30sec, I will still combine it with my others but perhaps this one could be almost a 'bridge' in the thesis.

September 30 Update

 General Update:

This week I finished my second pad and edited the frames to correct timing. I am scanning them at 300dpi into photoshop then editing the timing in there, I then export to premier and edit the color. The files are humongous so I think it may be time for me to get a hard drive. The school threw out the pegbar punch I was using which I am very sad about and don't really know why they did it, but I ordered the 3hole pegbar off amazon so it will be ok. I was getting bored with the newsprint so I decided I should take a break and try something else that I could incorporate to the final video. I chose to print out a whole bunch of frames from a video of D.Boon and animate on it, I enjoyed doing this and want to play around with this idea with childhood videos.

I've also been enjoying ceramics as a way to generate ideas and relax so here are some projects I have been working on...

September 23 Update

Media I've Consumed:

Adam Beckett - Life in an Atom - I am starting to think of how to incorporate my dream sequence my piece and this helped, I may just extend the dream sequence.

Ideas:

I have been in touch with my mom more than usual this week discussing things like the fear I am losing my French and relationships ect. I feel for my thesis one idea could be to have a recorded conversation with her as my sound.

I also bugged my dad to send me a voice recording of him singing a song I grew up with 'Belle-Ile-en-Mer' so I may use that.

Updates:

It is confirmed I will stick with hand drawn, the process is a lot more enjoyable and I am excited to learn how to composite everything and play with scanning my images. One idea I have is to also scan the backs of my frames as my marker bled through.

Scanned Animation:

Im having trouble uploading but for now it is on my instagram

Process Photos:
I can't stop animating I am almost done my second pad that I'll have to scan in for next week, but I am having a lot of fun with it.

My past internship at Plymptoons came in handy when I was figuring out how to scan my frames.

September 16 Update

 FEELINGS:

This week I had some trouble feeling confident in my original idea, I watched The Fantastic Planet and found the animation truly so beautiful that it made me not want to create something funny but rather something more serious. I’m not sure if I am going to change my original idea, but I have decided to animate on paper and create a dream sequence I can use in the beginning of my animation. I’ve begun the frames but will need to scan them in. I have been drawing lots of organic shapes and a dream sequence feels to be a perfect way to incorporate these drawings into my thesis.

MEDIA:

The Fantastic Planet - Made me want to make something dreamlike, and use lots of blue

The Family that eats Soil - Khavn “I feel no pleasure”

Naked Lunch - William Burroughs - I’ve just begun the book, this will inspire me in some way I hope, not too certain yet.
